Yep. I’m in the midst of my 90 day challenge. Believe it or not, between my two sites mightyinvestor.com and tomjohnston.org I posted 16 blog posts of greater or lesser lengths just yesterday alone. Kind of cray cray. I’m shooting for quantity not quality right now–which is a trip for someone of my temperament. I’ll circle back and clean up and fix typos at some point. Here’s my scorecard so far. http://tomjohnston.org/90-day-challenge-scorecard/

Miles, I haven’t missed a day–so your charity will have to wait ;). More broadly, to be honest, I’m having some second thoughts about if I really want to make my career being an expert on the internet. It’s a very unique way of life. I miss being on teams in real life tackling problems in the real world quite a bit. But I’m for sure going to keep going with this challenge for at least 90 days. Basic video equipment (tripod, mid, etc) is on the way–though I didn’t buy lights yet. So my mug will be out there soon.

Yep. I’m actually looking forward to jumping into the videos. Will circle back and add them to a number of the posts.

I have a few key anchor posts to write in the coming weeks. Sort of the overarching philosophy of MightyInvestor.com. As they say in Jamaica, “Soon Come, Mon….. Soon Come.”

Spend 80% of your time to create outstanding content and the balance 20% to promote it OR spend 20% of your time to create outstanding content and the balance 80% to promote it?

I think I may be somewhere around 90% create and 10% promote… And if you think about promotion… Like the YouTube descriptions, or transcribing it and turning it into a blog post or tweeting about it, etc… That is all content creation too!

But honestly, I really don’t do much promotion of my content at all and neither has Melanie through the years… If you put out good enough content often enough… The algorithms will pick you up and do the promotion work for you!

YouTube’s search feature and suggested video feature send me over 60% of my traffic here… Google sends over 60% of my blog traffic.

My whole plan/strategy is to prove that I’m a publisher that the platforms want to reward (because they make ad revenue off of showing great search results) so if my videos get searched and watched a lot… Then they show me to more people.

This is about as ‘white hat’ as you can get… And it works.

Now, that said… If you follow Brian Dean who teaches SEO he will tell you the exact opposite and be more in the camp of 80% promotion… I just don’t like doing things for links or begging for exposure… So I make the very best quality content I can as often as I can and that seems to be working for me.

Miles Beckler I agree. Was asking as Derek Halpern and many other internet marketers push for the 80% promo. In my mind, doing so might not tap into the power of the long-tail curve, which should not be overlooked IMO.

That is 100% it for me… That focus on the long game vs. short term game. Not sure where I cultivated the ability/willingness to defer gratification, but it has served me greatly!

I have a lot of friends who did shady promotion on their content back in the day (pre Panda and Penguin updates from Google) and their sites (and businesses) got de-indexed and literally went to zero.

We have weathered every update, every ‘storm’ and every time a guru starts freaking out because ‘the sky is falling’ our traffic, leads and sales continue to grow…. I attribute this to our focus on the long game!

Great question and discussion here… Thanks for that!

I honestly have to say, after discovering your channel, I have a very renewed sense of hope for my brand. It has been lagging for the past 2 and a half years and I realize now it is because of inconsistency and sporadically putting stuff out. I will be much more persistent. Thank you Miles. You are the first person I have ever encountered who puts up SO MUCH valuable content for free. I’m just going to follow what you say and do everything you do because it makes a whole lot of sense for me. Thanks again!!!

While thanks for your kind words and I’m so excited to hear about this realization that you had… As you follow what I say and do what I do, be sure to keep an eye on the data and the responses you’re getting from your audience and let that fine tune your approach.

Every niche is a little bit different and not every tactic and technique works within every audience and niche market… So take massive action go full speed ahead in the directions I’m talking about but remain open to the feedback you’re getting from your audience and do what works for them!

Very nice, how you guys kick started off website and blogs and old posts. I am very new but what I am seeing is that video is king without it, just low results. Blog and Website don’ t move much without it. Do you have video studio, how did you make one, what components goes into completing a you tube video. Are there retakes? Editing or does it flow naturally.

Wasn’t doing a 30 day challenge per se but I have started live streaming via youtube (when it cooperates) every weekday morning to get content on my channel. I have been bad about promoting it though because I stream to 2 other places at the same time. I have been working on some content just for YT though. this makes me want to step to the plate. So, that’s exactly what I’m going to do, I’m going to create content just for YT and link it back to my blog. Thanks for the great idea. I shall start my challenge on the 20th of February, marking my calendar now.

Right on! I love the analogy of the row of dominoes and how can we get the most number of dominoes to fall with flicking only one first Domino. What is that content creation or origination thing you can do very consistently (very easily) and then upload/repurpose/syndicate that content to other platforms in other formats.

One thing I’ve been using is a system called trint.com to to transcribe my videos and help me turn them into text content that I’m publishing to my WordPress blog shortly after publishing. I’ll make a video on that soon

I’ve been using Youtube as a hack, I upload my content, let youtube do their transcription thing. I go in and make corrections then download. Not sure if trint.com costs you but this is a free hack. I’m a fairly new business so learning all the save money stuff 🙂

Wow that is an awesome hack! Trint does cost $.25 per minute transcribed but offers 30 minutes free… I guess the only question is regarding the accuracy of the transcriptions which really doesn’t matter, because you figured out a system that works for you! That’s the big trick!

That whole concept of getting everything you can out of all you’ve got is so important it is good to hear that you’re leveraging the content that you’re making in every direction you can!

Very inspiring. I’m not ready to get in front of the camera yet. I might get Walter to take the 30 day challenge though. What do you think about videotaping the making of a podcast? Is that too boring?

      Feb 14. 2017

I’ve already told Melanie that when we do a podcast when were in town, I’m putting my phone up on a tripod and going to record the whole thing. I think it’s a great idea to videotape the podcasts! Joe Rogan of the Joe Rogan experience publishes his video podcasts on YouTube I know he gets approximately 20 million views per month on the video side and about 75,000,000 downloads per month on the iTunes side. Obviously that is a massive difference, but it’s more of a process of meeting users where they prefer to consume content!

For Wally with the direction he’s going this could be a great move right now… It’s amazing that when we show people exactly how to do what’s needed to accomplish their goals (whether it’s marketing, building website, setting up ads) such a high percentage of people watch with interest, like the content, and then want to hire you for services.

Last thing here… You can always do slideshow based videos and record a 22nd talking head intro and then segue into a slideshow where you’re only showing the slideshow so 80% plus of the video is actually manicured slides

Miles and Melanie! Hi! I just wanted to touch base and say today marks 30 days and the 30th video! BOOOM ?I’m also uploading to my website daily as well. I do have to learn how to effectively promote my videos now off of youtube.

I have no idea what to expect. I have 19 subscribers so that’s a start 🙂 My views is 593 and watch time is 1513.It’s difficult in the beginning cause I have no idea what markers to use as a gauge if I suck or not lol (i know the stats but what stats are good??) :D. I’m ranking in almost every single video…..at what point “Should” I start seeing momentum?

Anyways, I’m not stopping 😀 The hat is well over the fence! I’d love for you to peek at my channel and who knows…maybe at the 90 day mark or 120 days I’ll be a case study lol? ?
P.S. Melanie, I LOVE your weekly readings!

+Bodies After Babies ‘momentum’ means different things to different people and in different niches… Honestly, you have momentum now… It keeps building!

The fact that you have put out 30 videos in 30 days is a MASSIVE accomplishment. That is the only metric worth monitoring.

You can expect to see your month over month numbers to continue to increase with the longer you keep it up.

For promotion, just be sure that doesn’t take away from your energy for publishing… I didn’t start putting content on my blog for months… And still rarely post to FB.

Just finding that balance and marathon runners pace is key…

Great vid guys. Question: Do you think you should do the polarizing from the start. When you start you already don’t have an audience and no likes on your video, if you start getting dislikes that is just terrible for your reputation isn’t it? Maybe you could be a bit more careful when you start. What do you say, Miles? What’s your opinion on this?

Is there a way to make a subscription to a playlist on a channel only?
So for instance, I like to cook, and if you like me on Facebook you can see all of my cooking videos which typically will get between 500 and 1000 views.
Also I have a dental training program for dental assistance on my YouTube channel, so is there a way to have people subscribe to the cooking show only ?
